Leaving Salesforce NPSP: your realistic options

You don't have to leave NPSP: it's still supported, just frozen. If it's costing more admin time than it's worth, most small and mid-size nonprofits look at a dedicated donor CRM such as Bloomerang, Little Green Light, Neon CRM or DonorPerfect. Bloomerang and DonorPerfect say they include or offer free data conversion.

Should you leave NPSP at all?

Nothing forces a move today: Salesforce says NPSP will continue to be supported (is NPSP going away?).1 Answer these honestly first:

  • Does someone on staff (or a paid partner you can afford) actually maintain your Salesforce org?
  • Do you depend on custom objects, automations or AppExchange apps that a simpler CRM wouldn't have?
  • Is consultant time, not license cost, the biggest Salesforce expense you have?

If you answered yes to all three, staying on Salesforce (NPSP now, Nonprofit Cloud later) is often the sensible call. If not, a dedicated donor CRM is usually simpler to run. That's our editorial judgment, not a vendor claim.

What breaks when you leave NPSP?

Salesforce's Data Export Service produces a zip of CSV files, weekly only on Enterprise, Performance and Unlimited editions, and the zip is deleted 48 hours after the notification email. Download it straight away.12

Households: NPSP stores people as Contacts in Household Accounts, and some destinations, Bloomerang among them, can't create households by import.1314

Recurring gifts and pledges often can't be created by a destination's import tool (Bloomerang's can't), so ask the vendor's conversion team or plan manual entry.146

Custom objects, automations, reports and integrations don't move by themselves. Moving even within Salesforce to Agentforce Nonprofit means rebuilding or re-mapping them.1315

Leaving NPSP: FAQs

Is NPSP being discontinued?

No date has been announced. Salesforce says NPSP will continue to be supported, but it has had no new features since March 2023 and new orgs no longer get it preconfigured.1162

Will Bloomerang migrate our Salesforce data for free?

Bloomerang says most migrations are included in your onboarding package, with a dedicated Conversion Project Manager. 'Most' isn't 'all', so confirm it in your quote.6

Can we keep our donation history?

Yes, if you export it first. Salesforce's Data Export Service includes your records as CSV files; check that gift counts and totals match after the move.12

Do we need a consultant to leave Salesforce?

Not always. Bloomerang and DonorPerfect offer vendor-run conversion, Little Green Light's import is self-serve with a consultant network for complex data, and our directory lists firms that do NPSP migrations.61718
